What are we Looking for from Applicants?

In all these roles we are looking for people who are comfortable working with others and have some experience in design. The key skills we are looking for are the ability to think on your feet, research and good time management.

For the leadership roles you’ll work across the subsystem teams to keep things running smoothly. You’ll be supported by the team lead (Finn) and the treasurer (Mark) to make sure we’re on time and on budget. Therefore we look for people who are comfortable leading teams and working with other team leaders.

It all sounds like a big challenge, but they’ll be lots of us working on it together and it’s a great chance to grow your experience, enhance your CV, meet new people and get stuck into a real engineering project. For more information on these roles and any questions please email hw-rail@hw.ac.uk or fill in the form at the bottom of this page and we'll get back to you as soon as we can.

Subsystem Team Member

Subystem team members are at the heart of the team, as part of one of our two subsystem teams; Mechanical systems and Electrical and Control you'll work as part of a small team to design and build your choosen susbystem. This role is a great way to gain practical engineering experience and provides a stepping stone to leadership roles in future years. This role is open to all students of all disciplines that are relevant to the subsytem team.

Electrical and Control Team Lead

You’ll be in charge of overseeing the design and manufacture of all the electrical and control systems on the locomotive, don’t worry you’ll have a whole team to help you! As we’re currently planning on a battery powered electric locomotive, your responsibilities will include components such as the drive, motor, battery, as well as the needed control and monitoring systems. This position is ideal for Robotics and Electrical Engineering students.

Mechanical Team Lead

This role involves overseeing the design and manufacture of the frame and body of the locomotive as well as the suspension and braking systems onboard. As with all the subsystem team leaders you’ll need to work closely with the other teams to ensure that at the end of the day everything comes together. This role is suited for Mechanical Engineers.

Safety Lead

As part of our IMechE requirements one member of our team is in charge of overseeing all the safety systems onboard; from electrical, fire and mechanical safety systems your role will be to supervise the design of these systems working closely across all the subsystem teams. You will also ensure the manufacture is conducted safely. Once the locomotive has been manufactured and we are at competition your main role will be to supervise operations such as unloading and rerailing the locomotive as well as some of the challenges in which the IMechE mandates a safety supervisor. This role is open to students from all three disciplines.

Technical Director

This role has the widest remit of any of the positions, supervising the subsystem teams and advising on and approving major design decisions as we piece everything together. This is the most senior role available, and we’ll need you to help across the board with things like reports and advising on the running of the team, spotting potential problems as they arise. This role is open to all disciplines.

Project Manager

Working closely with the team lead this is a crucial role managing the logistics and ensuring that the team has all the resources needed in place on time and on budget. This is a new role for this year and it reflects the more complex nature o the project as we start manufacture and become a joint team.
